hello rcians
« on: May 23, 2008, 10:31:16 AM »
hi, i found this site by fate and now grateful to share my hobby.
i fly planes, choppers and race/drift rc cars when i was 11yrs old,now im 22. . i started this hobby when i was introduced by my dad, initially with control line airplane. my 1st plane was a low-wing red dragon, scratch built from dad's plans during his skooldays. later on we both ventured onto r/c and i took it up quickly. my 1st trainer was 2stroke highwing from tower hobbies 4ch. obviously crashed few times, but managed to repair with balsa and cement. later on scratchbuilt the same plane out of multi-wall plastic sheet, and plywood for the servo and engine housing. since day 1 i was using Enya engines, never thought of O.S. cos my dad has been using since his skooldays. later on tried choppers, wasn't really my thing...then driftting caught me, and got myself a tt01 tamiya. only recently i played with choppers again, as my nephews were interested. now i want to start this hobby again and rebuilt my planes.

Hello James!

Welcome to the forum.  You did not state where are you from and where do you fly?  Hope you enjoy your stay here in this forum.

Hi James, Welcome to the Forum! I was once like you... started pretty young at RC cars and approx 15 yrs old when I started on my first Rookie 40 trainer which was made of balsa and powered by a trusty OS40FP engine. It was the best trainer I have flown.. very stable and a cool plane. It's a Japanese Kit after all. The plane however is not a total write off since I crashed it onto a lamp post straight on during landing. Due to parallex error,.. I thought the plane was infront of the lamp post.... unfortunately it was behind it and I crashed straight into it. I cracked the spinner dead in half, killed the engine casing & well.. exploded the entire structure of the plane. That gives you an indication of how "aligned" I was with the runway. Smack in the center! If it wasn't for that crash, I think I'll still have my plane with me today. I upgraded to a Circus 40 (low wing) soon after and only recently sold it a few years back when I got back into the hobby. I also have a pattern plane and now a Harmon Rocket.

I'd like to say hi to Henry Tan (if he can remember me) who was my first SIFU in teaching me how to fly. He did a mighty fine job and hope to hear from him again if he happen to stumble upon this post. He used to own a hobby shop in Imbi Plaza on the ground floor during those days and I did have the pleasure to spending sometime with him there while I was building up my plane.

Also I'd like to pay my respects to Kitson Leong who was a pleasant and jovial man who thought me how to perform "emergency" landings and drilled me to perfection. I used to practice dead stick landings with my pattern plane and I always managed to bring it back safely. Either he was a darn good teacher or I was darn lucky!

oh sorry for not stating my location...i think was more excited just to splurge myself in. lol.
im from kl, and use to fly in shah alam batu tiga, but now got houses dy. then went on to tudm air strip at sungai besi...the flyers there had bit of a prob, and 1 guy lost control of his plane(rm25k gone, need to be towed behind car kind) into the industrial site across the highway. since then restricted to fly there. i do once in a while start my engine at home, and fly at cyberjaya alone. syiok sendiri...no one bother me flying lazily.

Welcome James. I know what you mean. It's a bitch trying to find a nice flying field. I wish Malaysia was more like the states... where we have ample and proper flying fields. Someone should get the government to allocate a proper space for us. Sooner or later, we'll all be flying small park flyers and worse still... be stuck at our homes flying simulators.

I used to fly at KD but I heard recently there are like politics going on. How sad is this right ?

Welcome jamesc. You fly in Cyberjaya? Where? Or maybe you'd rather not say so that you can continue to syiok sendiri...  ;)

Adrian, I took another one of my 10 minute visits to the KD flying site - there weren't many people but I did see a few foamies, other low-wing electrics and one electric ducted fan go up.

Re: restricted flying - yes how to solve this? At one time, I thought that a bunch of small indoor foamies could be fun, but I have found through some preliminary playing about with the stuff that the wires for things like the magnet+coil actuators are so thin and so light that some crashes flex the airframe enough to snap the little wires. Then fixing it is a real bother. So there is a practical limit to how small you can build, and how large ($$$) as well. But at least on RCBUDDIES.com Malaysians can take this journey together and share our experiences.

Hey Jason. What day and time were you at KD? I'm sure lots of ppl fly there except the timing must be wrong. Are you flying there these days? Still got to Maiden the Eagle. Been a little tied up with reno work on the apartment. That's where my cash is going these days as well! crap...
