Seized up old engine
« on: June 27, 2008, 11:40:18 PM »
Although these days I have been electric so far, I unearthed some of my now 20 year old engines from when Adrian and I were just starting out. Interesting thing is, that before packing them away all those years ago, if I remember correctly, I cleaned and lubed them all the same way. But just one of the engines is all sticky and certain parts won't budge at all. Looks like I either forgot to do that one, or I didn't do a good job. The piston will crank slowly, but there's clearly a lot of gunk in there. The throttle won't move at all and so far, all efforts to forcefully remove the throttle assembly from the carb have failed. The idea is to disassemble it, clean it, then lube it up again and re-assemble. The question is, what liquid can I used to dissolve the old castor oil and crap, and what grease do I use to lube it up again before I reassemble?

The last time one of my engines seized up from all the gunk... I used petrol to dissolve the gunk. Worked alright for me ;) When putting back for storage... I'd put loads of after run into it. That should work... but its always best to give the engine a run every now and then.
The ground seems to come up a bit too fast!

OK, I'll try that out. I'm in the process of making a test run bench as well as various motor mounts for the various engines... Since I no longer have a power jigsaw, I am reminded that I seem to be totally incable of cutting a straight and true line through plywood!  :-[
