Power to Weight Ratio needed for 3D Flight?
« on: December 30, 2008, 10:29:40 AM »
What's the power of weight ratio needed for 3D Flight? Is it possible for a plane to pull off hovers perpetually or will all motors eventually overheat? I can't seem to get the power needed for sustained hovers. Perhaps its my previous battery (too heavy and not enough Cs) or perhaps its just the motor and prop.
The ground seems to come up a bit too fast!

Hi brother, the rule of 3D flying is the lightest the better, and try not overweight your plane, example, like the extra 3D slim plane u flown. the max weight for this little plane is just 300-350g is the best, if it more then that, it will be very hard for 3D, because as usual, heavy, and the prop size maybe 10 X3.8 . and the power to weight ratio for 3D should be 150-200w/lb. so what is your weight of your plane? and how many watt your motor take? if you have reading, then u calculate out the power to weight ratio. if your motor can take about 15amp, then it is more then enough for 3D. just sharing, hope it help ;D

I have included a good reference obtained from another site and posted it on http://www.rcbuddies.com/2009/02/11/how-to-choose-a-power-set-up-for-your-model/ for everyone's reference on how to choose electric systems for their planes. Hope you all find it useful like I did.
